A 12-day budget Himalayan itinerary from Delhi, under ₹25,000

A real, mile-by-mile route from Delhi to the Parvati Valley and back — buses, guesthouses, and what each leg actually costs in 2026.

A 12-day budget Himalayan itinerary from Delhi, under ₹25,000

Most Himalaya itineraries you find online quietly assume a car, a booked-ahead hotel chain, and a flight into Kullu. This one assumes none of that. It is the route I actually log when a friend messages "I have twelve days and about twenty-five thousand rupees — where do I go?"

The answer, most years, is the Parvati Valley loop: Delhi → Kasol → Tosh → Kheerganga → Manikaran → back. It is cheap because it runs on public buses and guesthouses, it is beautiful in a way that does not need editing, and it does not require permits or guides for the legs below.

The route at a glance

Delhi ●━━━━━━━● Bhuntar ●━━━● Kasol ●━━━● Tosh
                                     ┊
                          Kheerganga ○ (trek, 1 night)
                                     ┊
                          Manikaran ○━━━━━━━━━● back to Delhi
  • Legs 1–2 (Delhi → Kasol): overnight Volvo/HRTC bus, ~10–12 hours.
  • Legs 3–5 (valley hopping): local buses and shared taxis, 30–90 min each.
  • Leg 6 (Kheerganga trek): a real 12 km day hike, one night at the top.

Twelve days is generous for this loop. The slack is deliberate — weather turns, buses run late, and the point of a valley like this is to not rush it.

Where the money actually goes

Here is the honest breakdown for one person, off-season shoulder months (late September or May), staying in dorms and shared rooms:

  • Transport, round trip Delhi–valley–Delhi: ₹2,500–3,500 on buses.
  • Local hops inside the valley: ₹800–1,200 total.
  • Accommodation, 11 nights: ₹400–700 a night in Kasol and Tosh guesthouses; ₹300 in the basic Kheerganga camps. Call it ₹6,000.
  • Food, 12 days: ₹350–500 a day if you eat where locals and long-stay travellers eat, not the Israeli-menu cafes on the main strip. ₹5,000.
  • Kheerganga trek: free to walk; ₹300–500 for the night at the top.

That lands around ₹16,000–19,000. The ₹25,000 ceiling leaves genuine room for a splurge meal, a day of doing nothing on a riverside deck, or the bad-weather buffer you will be glad you kept.

Day by day

Days 1–2 — Delhi to Kasol. Take the evening bus from Kashmiri Gate or Majnu Ka Tila. Book the HRTC ordinary or a private Volvo a day ahead in peak months; walk-up is fine off-season. You arrive at Bhuntar around dawn, catch the local bus up the valley, and are in Kasol by mid-morning. Sleep. Walk the river. Do nothing ambitious.

Days 3–4 — Kasol and Chalal. Chalal is a flat 30-minute walk across the river from Kasol and costs nothing. It is quieter, cheaper to sleep in, and a good place to reset your sense of what a fair room rate is before you climb higher.

Days 5–6 — Tosh. Bus to Barshaini, then the short uphill walk into Tosh. This is the postcard leg — the village hangs off the mountainside and the guesthouses higher up have the views. Rooms are cheaper the more you climb.

Days 7–8 — Kheerganga trek. From Barshaini it is roughly 12 km up to the hot springs at Kheerganga, four to six hours depending on your pace and the weather. Carry water, a headlamp, and layers; the temperature drops hard after sunset. Sleep in a camp at the top, soak in the springs, walk down the next morning.

Days 9–10 — Manikaran and Kasol. Manikaran's gurudwara serves free langar and has natural hot springs used to cook the community meal. It is a genuinely moving stop and it costs nothing. Drift back to Kasol for your last valley nights.

Days 11–12 — Back to Delhi. Reverse the opening leg. Take the night bus from Bhuntar so you lose a sleeping night to travel, not a daylight one.

What to carry, what to skip

Carry: layers you can peel, a rain shell, a headlamp, a power bank, cash in small notes (ATMs thin out fast above Kasol), and a basic first-aid kit with rehydration salts. Skip: a big pack, a fixed hotel plan, and the assumption that you will have signal. Jio and Airtel work in Kasol and patchily in Tosh; above Barshaini, assume nothing.

The valley rewards travellers who arrive without a rigid plan and leave with a better one. Log your own version as you go — the route above is a starting line, not a script.
